The Theraflex machine does it again… along with other effective non-surgical scoliosis treatments:

“My daughter was diagnosed with severe juvenile scoliosis just after her 8th birthday. She had a 42 degree thoracic curve and slight lumbar.
If I can give any advice to parents, it is to advocate by getting informed and not being afraid to mix treatments.
you may have to argue with some doctors as my experience has been that they each want to have the only sure thing.
I assure you, they don’t. Here is a quick over view of the last 3+ years:
Researched alt methods – decided to try Clear – two week intensive – down to 36 –
at home we had a month of 40 minute exercise routine twice daily – up to 47 –
discovered that Clear can have destabilizing affect on children.
They can “swing” many degrees between treatments.
It works better after puberty from what I understand – not saying it doesn’t work –
just saying it did not work for our child and may have increased rotation
1. SpineCor – curve dropped to 40 immediately and down to 36 within 4 weeks – however, only 8 and faced many growth spurts that could cause progression,
we decided to combine with other treatments (SpineCor allows her to move freely with some correction to avoid muscle atrophy)
2. Theraflex – spent week with in Indiana the difference after 3 treatments was amazing-her posture and head tilt straightened right up.
We have been going for one week a year as distance makes it difficult
3. Hard bracing – she sleeps in a hard brace since that is when most growth occurs – her in brace x-ray now, after 3 years of up and down, is 19T/18L
4. Inversion – she hangs at least twice a week for 5 minutes and does some deep breathing exercises – usually right before getting into her hard brace for bed
5. Exercise routine – mostly core strength exercises – plus posture exercises – we try to change it up a bit every 3 months – so I keep doing research
So, she does all 5 of these things, has grown 7 inches since diagnosis and maintains about 34 degrees out of brace – give or take a few degrees
The biggest challenges – convincing the doctor that she was not going to have surgery –
he no longer mentions it and agrees that her routine is working.
Paying more attention to how she looks and feels than to an xray.
Since we don’t all have xray vision, what is more important is the way her posture looks and that she is not in any pain.
Plans and goals – now that she is entering puberty, we will find a way to increase Theraflex treatments through the year.
Our goal is to continue to keep her spine as straight as possible through puberty so there is no wedging when she
is finished growing – then continue with Theraflex and exercises
